has been Editor of the Evening Echo since October 2001. He has worked in
daily journalism for more than 20 years, writing about politics, education
and current affairs in general. He has also featured regularly on national
and local television and radio. Prior to his appointment as Editor of the
Evening Echo he was Deputy Editor of the newspaper for three years; Group
News Editor and Night News Editor of the Examiner and a reporter with the
Corkman/Kerryman and the Southern Star. A native of Fermoy, Co Cork, he
graduated from the School of Journalism, Rathmines, Dublin with an NCEA
Certificate in Journalism. He also holds an IMI Executive Development diploma.
Married to Jill Fenton, he has two children Sarah and Eoin.
Vincent Kelly - Deputy Editor and Business Editor He
started his newspaper career with the Connacht Tribune, Galway, later joining
the Irish Independent and following that spent four years as editor of his
home town paper, The Longford Leader. Vincent joined the then Cork Examiner
as court reporter 20 years ago. He has held the positions of news-editor
and assistant editor with the Evening Echo. Vincent has a keen interest in
training and is involved in running a Diploma in Journalism training course
provided by Thomas Crosbie Holdings, parent company of the Evening Echo.
The course is run in conjunction with The Editorial Centre, the No 1. journalism
training centre in the UK, is a first as TCH is the only media company in
the country offering its employees such a course. FeaturesJohn Dolan, Features Editor John
Dolan joined the Evening Echo in January 2001 after 14 years on newspapers
in England. He is the former Chief Sub Editor of the London Metro newspaper.
John is in charge of commissioning and overseeing features for the Echo,
which range from hard-hitting news features to entertainment, TV and showbiz
stories. He also edits several supplements a year including the Holly Bough
Christmas publication.
Wendy Good, Deputy Features Editor and Property Editor Wendy
Good joined the Evening Echo in 1998 after editing a magazine in London.
She has an honours degree in Media Studies from the University of Westminster,
specialising in print journalism. Since joining the Echo, Wendy has worked
as a news sub-editor, sports sub-editor and deputy news-editor. Wendy is
editor of the Cork and Limerick Property Views, contributes a weekly column
to women's supplement WOW! called The Good Life and is involved in other
supplements and feature pages. Maria Rolston, News Features Reporter Maria Rolston joined the Evening Echo news team in November 2005. A native
of County Fermanagh, Maria has an honours degree in English from Trinity
College Dublin and a post graduate certificate in Education from the University
of Nottingham. She spent two years freelancing for various Belfast publications
including The Belfast Telegraph, City Wide and Northern Woman, while editing
In Belfast, bi-annual student magazine. She took up the post of trainee
journalist with the award winning weekly Impartial Reporter Newspaper in
September 2002 where she progressed to the role of Senior News Reporter.
She was awarded a place on a US and Irish Embassy run Investigative Journalism
programme in Boston and New York in 2005 and later moved to Cork where she
took up the post of News Reporter and Environment Correspondent with the
Evening Echo. She was became News Features Reporter in September 2006 and
provides in- depth analysis features on weekly news events.Noel Welch - Features Reporter Noel Welch has worked in the editorial department since 1984 and is presently
a page editor on features. Noel was responsible for setting up the Old English Market Food Festival. He also founded the voluntary
hospital radio station in the Cork University Hospital back in 1988. Apart
from his features job, Noel is also interested in entertainment and has
compiled quizzes and written numerous articles on the local, national and
international. music scene.
NewsEmma Connolly, News Editor & Fashion Editor Emma
Connolly has an honours degree in Journalism and French from Dublin City
University. A native of Timoleague in West Cork, Emma previously worked
as a news reporter in the Western People for two years before joining the
Evening Echo as a news reporter. She is currently News Editor of the Evening
Echo where she heads up a team of 12 news reporters in Cork and one in Dublin.
Emma is also Fashion Editor for the paper. Elaine Duggan, Deputy News Editor Elaine Duggan is the Deputy News Editor with the Evening Echo. She graduated
from the National University of Ireland, Galway with a Higher Diploma in
Applied Communications, which she later upgraded to a Masters in Journalism.
She also has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Sociology from UCC
and was one of the first students to graduate from the Thomas Crosbie Holdings
Ltd Diploma in Journalism, accredited by the Editorial Centre in Britain.
She joined the Evening Echo on a full time basis in June 2001. She has worked
as a news reporter, Education and Religious Correspondent and Assistant
News Editor, before taking up her current position on the news desk. Prior
to joining the Echo she freelanced for the Irish Examiner, Irish News and
Carrigdhoun Newspaper. She was short listed for Regional Journalist of the
year in the National Media Awards in 2002. Mary Smithwick, Assistant News Editor & Political Editor A
Political Editor, Mary co-ordinates the Evening Echo's coverage of political
events at local and national level. In her roles as Regional News Editor
and Assistant News Editor, Mary also co-ordinates the work of a team of
regional reporters, and contributes to the work of the news desk. As well
as contributing as a commentator to numerous radio and television programmes,
Mary has also made presentations at a number of academic conferences on
politics. She also writes two weekly columns - Monday Monday is a contemporary
look at everyday life, while on Saturday she analyses the political events
of the week gone by. Originally from East Cork and now based in Cork city,
she has an honours law degree from UCC, and an honours Masters in Journalism
from DIT. She is currently studying for a Masters in Government and Public
Policy from UCC.Ann Murphy, Security Correspondent Ann
Murphy joined the newspaper in February 2003. The Macroom native became
the publication's security correspondent in March 2005. She won the regional
award for newspapers in the Justice Media Awards in 2006. Before working
with the Evening Echo, Ann was a senior news reporter with Inside Cork.
She also worked with Leader Group Newspapers in Ballincollig. Ann has a
degree in Media and Communication Studies from the University of Limerick,
and a HETAC Higher Diploma in journalism. Deirdre O'Reilly - News Reporter Deirdre
O'Reilly is the community reporter for the Evening Echo. Prior to her joining
the paper in 2000, she was news editor at 103FM radio in west Cork. In her
position as community reporter, Deirdre reports on every aspect of community
life in Cork. She also edits the weekly community supplement The Gates.
As part of her community brief she was part of the team that won three national
awards including the overall award for media coverage for the Community
Games. She also spearheads the Evening Echo Christmas Fundraising Appeal
which which has raised over €500,000 over the last three years.Ronan Bagnall - News Reporter Helen Walsh - News Reporter Alan Healy - News Reporter Patrick Hoare - Regional Reporter Padraig Hoare is a regional reporter with the Evening Echo, covering North and East Cork. A native of Cork city, he joined the Evening Echo in February 2008 after working with the Laois Nationalist, the Irish Post in London, and the Echo Group in Wexford. He holds a Thomas Crosbie Holdings HETAC Higher Diploma in Journalism, having received a degree in law from the University of London in 2006. Keen on all sports, Padraig has been employed as a professional boxing consultant by TV3 and a number of boxing promoters. He wrote a weekly column on sport in Wexford, leading to a regular slot on local radio stations. Padraig has an avid interest in politics at local, national and international levels, and is a keen US Presidential historian. Brian Lougheed, Pictures Editor Brian Lougheed is the Pictures Editor for the Evening Echo since 1998.
Brian has a full time staff of four dedicated Evening Echo photographers.
He also handles outside contracts and freelance photographers. Brian has
led his team to win several national photography awards.
Eoghan Dinan, Production Editor. Eoghan Dinan is a member of the senior management team at the Evening
Echo, holding the position of Production Editor. Eoghan holds an honours
Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree from University College
Cork (UCC) and is responsible for making sure the Evening Echo hits the
streets on time each day. He is the overall head of design for the
newspaper and also developed a weekly entertainment “out and about”
supplement called Downtown.
Rory Noonan, Chief Sub-Editor Rory
Noonan heads up the Evening Echo’s sub-editing team. He became Chief Sub
Editor in 2002 and holds a Supervisory Management Certificate from the Irish
Management Institute.SportJohn McHale, Sports Editor John
McHale is a former Irish international basketballer and brings a wealth
of sporting knowledge to his position. He joined the Evening Echo in 1999,
and had acted as Deputy Sports Editor since March 2000. John appears regularly
on television sports programmes. A graduate of the TCH Diploma in Journalism,
John is 35 years of age and is a native of Cork, living all his life in
the northside of the city and has an eight year old daughter Lori.
Éamonn Murphy, Deputy Sports Editor Éamonn Murphy was appointed Deputy Sports Editor of the Evening Echo
in 2006, having worked in the news and sport departments of the paper since
2005. Éamonn previously worked as a freelance sports reporter in
both print and broadcast media. A former student of UCC, he graduated in
2000 with an honours degree in English and History. Twenty-six year old
Éamonn is a native of Ballincollig, where he still resides with his
wife Annette, and is a passionate supporter of local sport in Cork. Mark Woods, Chief Sports Reporter Mark Woods has covered sporting events all over the world for the past
20 years. Hs covered two World Cups, the Tour De France, European
Championships as well as Ireland's rugby team. Mark is a former Sports Editor and has
been the Evening Echo's Chief Sports Writer for the past three years.
John Horgan, GAA John Horgan is the eyes and ears of Cork hurling. John has been covering
hurling in Cork for the past 15 years. A former Sports Editor of the Evening
Echo, John regularly sets the hurling agenda in Cork with his thought provoking
column GAA Chat.
Noel Spillane, Soccer Noel Spillane has been with the company for the past 25 years. He started
his career as a general sports writer and is now a soccer writer. Noel's
in-depth knowledge of the eircom League is unrivalled. Noel has covered
the top soccer tournaments all over the world for the Evening Echo.
Conor George, Sports journalist
Conor George has been with the Evening Echo since 2003 and working as a sports journalist at both national and regional levels since 1996, covering local, national and international sporting events. He is a former Sports Editor (Waterford News & Star) and Deputy Sports Editor (Evening Echo) and brings an extensive knowledge across a broad range of sports to his work. Conor has also worked in national and local television and radio. A native of Cork he played football and hurling with Bishopstown GAA Club and is passionate about all sports. |

Ronan Bagnall is an honours graduate from Queen's University, Belfast where he studied Law and Politics. A native of Newry Co. Down, he graduated with a BA in Politics in 2001. Ronan moved to Cork in 2003, where he completed a Diploma in Journalism and an Advanced Certifcate in Wine Appreciation. He began working with The Avondhu newspaper in North Cork in 2005 as a senior news reporter. He joined the Evening Echo in July 2006 as a news reporter.
Helen Walsh is the Evening Echo's West Cork Correspondent.
A native of Killarney, she graduated with an honours degree in European Studies with French and German from Trinity College Dublin in 2003, received a Diplome du Programme International from the Institut d'etudes politiques (Sciences-Po) in Paris and holds a first class Masters degree in International Relations from University College Cork.
Alan Healy is a news reporter with the Evening Echo. He was one of the first students to graduate from the Thomas Crosbie Holdings HETAC Higher Diploma in Journalism course. He worked in both the Evening Echo and the Western People newspaper in Co Mayo before taking up a fulltime position in The Kingdom newspaper in Co Kerry in 2004 where he worked as a senior reporter and deputy editor. He joined the Evening Echo on a full time basis in 2008. He also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computing from the Cork Institute of Technology.
