Shanahan hints at retirement plan

Waterford legend Dan Shanahan admits this is likely to be his last year with the Déise senior hurlers.

The Lismore clubman said yesterday of his winning goal for Waterford against Cork in the Munster SHC final replay that "it was great to finish off like that".

Asked if it was his last Munster hurling final, he said: "It probably will be. It’s great to finish off like that. It gets harder and harder to come back, it’s a young man’s game.

"It will be something else next year. It probably was my last Munster final."

Shanahan revealed he had contemplated retirement because he wasn’t starting games. "You would. Even last weekend in the 70 minutes I wasn’t on at all, and if Eoin Kelly had taken his chances I wouldn’t have got any game. But I have a lot of work put in this year and I enjoy encouraging the young lads. If I have anything to offer, which I have still, I will help Waterford."

Shanahan paid tribute to the blend of youth and experience which Waterford have, and to manager Davy Fitzgerald for getting the mix right.

"When you see lads coming out with ball, like Noel Connors, who I think is one of the best corner-backs going at the moment, then Tony (Browne) is on the other side. What is there, 12 or 13 years between them?

"He’s phenomenal (Browne), he’s a one-off. He’ll be there until he is 40. He’s a gem of a man on and off the field.

"There is a great mixture of youth and experience and I think it is a help the way Davy is blending it together as well."
