Ryder race still up in the air 8/10/2010 - 5:43:44 PM ![]() The final shoot-out for places in Europe’s Ryder Cup team does not look like having the cast list that captain Colin Montgomerie anticipated. Justin Rose has already said he will not be playing the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in two weeks’ time even if he has not secured his place. He wants to target the money-spinning FedEx Cup play-offs instead. Sergio Garcia, meanwhile, is planning a complete break from the game if he does not recover form at the USPGA Championship this week. But the current entry list also does not have Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ross McGowan or Simon Dyson on it. There is still time for them to add their names, but Harrington – currently just outside the automatic qualifying places – said today: “I’m committed to doing a Special Olympics clinic at the Barclays Classic (in America). “I’m going to try to qualify by right, but I’m going to try and do that clinic.” The final major of the season at Whistling Straits could remove the need to be in Scotland for all the above, but it remains to be seen how Montgomerie will react if a whole group of players not certain of their spots are not in Scotland. He was critical of Ian Poulter when he missed the same event two years ago. Poulter was still given a wild card by then captain Nick Faldo, but Montgomerie may take a harder line. Casey, who was Faldo’s other wild card, would say only: “I haven’t looked at my schedule after this week. “I’m focusing on this, so I need to get the game in shape, get the driving taken care of and play well and we’ll see what happens after Sunday afternoon.” |
