INMO in call for health summit

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) is to call for a "crisis summit" to tackle the problems facing the health sector.

The INMO is meeting with senior HSE management in Dublin later today where it will state its intention to seek the holding of round table talks, at national level, to discuss the crisis facing the public health service.

"The INMO is stating clearly, and unequivocally, that the level of cuts, currently being imposed upon our public health service, are compromising patient care, lowering standards and greatly increasing the clinical risk to patients," the organisation said in a statement.

INMO General Secretary Liam Doran said the body would be calling for a national health summit, involving Health Minister Mary Harney, her department, the incoming CEO of the HSE, other senior managers of the HSE and other staff organisations representing frontline professionals. A

"At this summit we will attempt to agree a more planned, co-ordinated, safe and appropriate approach to dealing with our budgetary difficulties while maintaining safe and quality assured services to the patients and wider public alike," Mr Doran said.

Mr Doran said the INMO believed that the suggested summit should take place within a month.
