 Minister considers ATM fees after tiger kidnapping 9/3/2010 - 6:53:13 AM  The Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has suggested charging people for ATMs in order to cut down on raids. Mr Ahern made the suggestion following a tiger-kidnapping raid yesterday which netted a criminal gang €300,000. Yesterday morning a woman was taken from her home in Templeogue in Dublin by an armed gang. Her partner, an AIB bank official, was sent to the branch in Clondalkin where he was instructed to obtain a sum of money and await instructions. The woman was released and the gang got away with €300,000. Speaking after the raid, the Justice Minister said he was looking at the possiblity of introducing higher ATM fees to reduce crime - his logic being if more people are discouraged from using ATMs there would be less cash in circulation and therefore fewer raids. The idea has already been rubbished by the opposition with Labour describing it as "hair-brained'' and Fine Gael criticising the minister for using the kidnapping to float the idea. |
