Protest to be held outside Kilkenny hare-coursing event 1/14/2006 - 8:50:32 AM Animal welfare groups are holding a protest against bloodsports today outside a hare-coursing event in Kilkenny. The event, in Sevenhouses near Danesfort, is a new hunting competition, with half of the places taken up by British participants. Hunting was banned in the UK last year, and the protesters want the Irish Government to follow that example. The Irish Council Against Blood Sports says that even though dogs are now muzzled in hare-coursing, the hares are still battered into the ground, many dying as a result. They are appealing to Minister for the Environment Dick Roche to put a stop to licences for hares to be taken out of the wild for this sport. The council say the practice is barbaric and unacceptable. |
