The xx 'terrified' by Mercury limelight

The xx are so “terrified” after winning the Mercury Prize this week, they are going into hiding.

The publicity shy band– who scooped the industry award for best UK album of the last year on Tuesday – are not enjoying the new attention the accolade has put on them and hope to sneak away to work on their second album away from the limelight.

Singer and guitarist Romy Croft said: “I’m terrified, I’ve been scared by the whole thing. We’ve been touring since we were nominated so we haven’t had to deal with too much attention.

“We never rush anything and definitely don’t want to rush the second album. We’ve found that we can’t write while we’re on tour and we don’t finish until mid October. Then next year we’ll disappear and write quite a lot.”

Romy also said she and bandmates Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith are now better musicians than when they recorded their self-titled debut, which will have an effect on their sparse, spacious sound.

She added to the Daily Star newspaper: “A lot of the first album was born out of the fact we could only play our instruments quite simply.

“Picking up the guitar every single day you can’t help but play better. As far as the sound goes, we’ll play it by ear.”
