 ‘Going the Distance’ a charming, honest tale 9/9/2010 - 2:11:51 PM  Director: Nanette Burstein Cast: Drew Barrymore, Christina Applegate, Justin Long, Ron Livingston Cert: 15 Rom-coms usually fail because we can’t truly relate to the characters and the problems deepen if the plot involves the difficulties of keeping a long-distance relationship alive. But here, in a sweet, funny and unusually gimmick-free story, we are given a romance that most of us can relate to, carried out by two good people – Garrett (Long) and Erin (Barrymore) – across a 3,000 mile divide. Garrett, the one with the commitment hang-up, meets Erin, visiting New York from San Fransisco. They fall in love, but there are no telegraphed emotions … they fall in love, as simple as that. The problem is that she has to go back to California and they must try to keep love going. The delight in the film comes through the lack of manufactured obstacles and complications, just the distance between them. The supporting cast adds strength to a charming, honest tale featuring ordinary folk. Star Rating: 4/5 |
